College Football | Carr to step down
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said he plans to retire at the end of the season.
Carr, 62, informed his players and staff of his plans Sunday during a team meeting and said he will comment further at a news conference today. He reportedly intends to coach the Wolverines in their bowl game.
Carr has a 121-40 record, winning the 1997 national championship and five Big Ten Conference titles. On the minus side, Carr lost in six of the team’s last seven meetings with Ohio State and the Wolverines started this season with a home loss to second-tier Appalachian State.
Although Louisiana State is No. 1 in the nation, there is speculation LSU coach Les Miles - a former Michigan player and assistant coach - might be Carr’s successor.
Under the terms of his contract, Miles would have to pay LSU $1.25 million if he leaves to coach the Wolverines.
LSU, Kansas are 1-2
in BCS standings
NEW YORK - All that stands between a Louisiana State-Kansas matchup in the BCS National Championship Game are some tough opponents.
LSU was first and unbeaten Kansas was second in the Bowl Championship Series standings Sunday; the chance of another team catching either without the Tigers or Jayhawks losing seems remote.
The Tigers, who face Arkansas on Friday before playing either Georgia or Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference title game Dec. 1, lead the polls and the computer ratings; Kansas is second across the board.
Kansas moved up one BCS spot this week. West Virginia, taking advantage of losses last week by Oregon and Oklahoma, jumped from sixth to third. Missouri advanced from fifth to fourth.
Kansas and Missouri play Saturday in Kansas City, Mo., with the winner going to the Big 12 title game on Dec. 1.
Notes
• Baylor fired coach Guy Morriss, who was 18-40 in five seasons and had a year left on his contract. Mike Singletary, an ex-Baylor and NFL standout linebacker who is an assistant head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, reportedly is the leading candidate to replace Morriss.
• Mississippi put 20 players on probation indefinitely after players twice stole items from hotels. A news release said the players have paid for the items that were stolen.
