People in Sports | Oldies but goodies pitching rotation

Need starting pitching? Here’s a ready-made rotation: Tom Glavine, Kenny Rogers, Curt Schilling, David Wells. All are free agents.

One drawback: All four pitchers are over 40. But they have won 968 games among them, and no rotation can make that claim.

If a team wants to sign all four pitchers, backups of their generation are also available as free agents. Jose Mesa is 40, and Todd Jones will be 40 before next season is a month old.

The free-agent pool won’t fill out a starting team of 40-somethings, but it could make a good start with 43-year-old Barry Bonds. Kenny Lofton and Luis Gonzalez, each 40, and Reggie Sanders, who will turn 40 Dec. 1, could complete the outfield.

Then there’s the oldest free agent of all time. Julio Franco, 49, wants to be playing when he is 50, so Aug. 23 is the magic date.
